Take a good look at that picture for that might what become of the "Great Brown Hope". A Congressman.
Another victory in the ring for Manny Pacquiao. Another victory that would again catapult his hero status further in the eyes of the Filipinos.
Personally, I'm not a boxing fan, nor do I really pay attention to whats going on in the boxing world. The only thing that got me writing about Pacquiao's latest victory is the fact that its election season, and because he is running for office......... Again!
Now I do recognize the fact that he does bring pride to our little 3rd world nation. Every win gives hope to thousands, if not millions of Filipinos. Filipinos who dreams of also emulating his rags to riches story.
The danger that i see here is that the judgement of our countrymen come May 11 might become clouded with hero worship.
What is a hero anyway? As defined in merriam-webster.com, a hero is "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities". Ok, his achievements are unquestionable, but is he noble? Technically, he is running for a congressional seat, so being noble is not a prerequisite.Going back, I think "Hero" is way too much of a title to grant upon Manny. There is a distinct difference between "hero" and "idol" and that difference should be understood.
I will not get into this further for now since the light bulb on top of my head lit up with a future blog post defining hero and idol.
This article is not about Pacquiao's latest achievement. Nor it is an attack on his character as a person. this is more of an attack on the people behind him that uses the pride, joy and especially the hope that he brings to every Filipino.
Sad to say, Pacquiao is nothing more than a wooden horse that certain personalities want to get into the walls of congress. These personalities are banking on the fact that Manny is but a "simpleton" when it comes to playing political poker. Lets say he does get elected to Congress. And lets say his intentions are sincere. What can this person with a "humble" background do against seasoned political figures during debates about the technicalities of passing resolutions? What will he do once his opinions are criticized? Punch the hell out of his peers?
Credibility or intellectual background is not the issue here. It is "intellect" itself.
I hope that one day after practicing with his sparring partner, he gets punched in the head and then realizes that he is nothing more than just a puppet being made do dance to the tune of his politician handlers.

my sentiments exactly
