In my defense, no I am not a Marcos supporter. And no, I'm not in any way under the influence of any hallucinogenic substance.
The reason why i decided to write something about one of the most hated Filipino is the fact that he did things during his time as President/Dictator/Demi God that did help the country. Some of you must find that hard to believe, but I assure you he did. Come on, even Erap did a few good things. ( Nah, I'm just pulling your leg on the Erap statement ) Here are some of the things our beloved dictator did for our country.
Masagana 99 - A program of Marcos during the 70's where the idea was for farmers to harvest a "bountiful" 99 cavans of rice (4,900 kilos) per hectare. Surprisingly from 1976 to 1985 the Philippines experienced its highest local rice production and even contributed to the regional buffer stockpile. Take note that during the Marcos era we "exported" rice. A far cry from our current state now as the worlds biggest rice importer.
Did you know that it was during the Marcos era that the LRT/MRT was conceived? Yes it was. But don't have much details about it since I'm not from Manila. =)
The Primary Health Care Program ( PHC ) - Awarded by the United Nations as one of the most effective health care program of any third world nation at that time. The catholic church was fuming about it, but when was the last time the UN praised one of our nation's recent projects?
We were self reliant when it came to energy - Although the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was a big disaster waiting to happen if it did actually get to work, we were once second to the US when it came to geothermal utilization. Aside from a non working nuclear power plant and a few coal fired plants, we were actually "green". The country even cut down its oil import from 100% to just 40% during 1985. How much is one liter of gas nowadays?
Low crime rate - How did he go about achieving this you ask? He implemented martial law of course. What criminal in his right mind ( aside from those who are in power ) would try to do something illegal knowing that he/she can just be sentenced without a proper trial? If you think about all the political killings during the time of Marcos and compare it with she devil's rule now, martial law was better. Why? For the simple reason that it was a time where we as a people were not free. To think that we are not under a state of military rule now, ( or so we think ) so much for our so called democracy huh?
And the biggest reason why i think Marcos was good for us is this. We as a people were disciplined. We followed the rules because we were afraid of the consequences if we didn't. How many of us cross the street even though we see a no crossing sign? How many of us throw our garbage wherever we want to? How many of us use what little influence we have to bribe people? How many of our leaders steal our money from our country's coffer? Corruption is an open secret in this third world nation of ours. At least during his time, he was the only one and a few of his cronies doing all the monkey business.
I got into trouble during high school for telling my teacher that we needed a president like Marcos to cut our horns. We Filipinos tend to forget and sometimes abuse the freedom were enjoying right now. Marcos scared us shitless. But if you think about it, Jesus and his dad also has the same effect on us. Does that make them evil too?
